If you haven’t heard, we in North America have an exciting opportunity coming up on April 8, 2024. There will be a total solar eclipse and it will be visible to a lot of us!

There was another total solar eclipse in 2017 that many had the opportunity to view, and the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse will be visible to even more of us. Thirteen states are in the path of totality, with some locations experiencing up to 4 1/2 minutes of totality, which is almost twice as long as the totality in 2017.

There was a partial eclipse back in the fall but this will be even better. We used a saltine as a pinhole camera to see the eclipse back then. :)

This eclipse will be a total solar eclipse. It is estimated that 31 million people in the United States live in the path of totality. Those people are lucky–they don’t have to go anywhere to experience it. Just walk outside!

2024 Total Solar Eclipse

As luck would have it, we will be at a wedding here in Texas in the path of totality, so we plan to just make a long weekend of it.

It’s amazing how booked up all the accommodations are around here as people make plans to experience the eclipse. There are some AirBnbs in the Hill Country going for $2000 to $4000 per night, some with a 4-night booking minimum! That’s a bit excessive, in my opinion.

The Great American Eclipse website is a wonderful resource, which includes a wealth of information and very detailed maps so you can see if where you live is in the path of totality. Even if you’re not in the path, many areas are within driving distance if you wish to experience it.

The website even has links for each state that will experience totality so that you can get more details.

While the path of totality includes some major cities, there are also many small towns in the path, and crowds are expected everywhere.

If you plan to travel to see the eclipse, you need to plan ahead, especially if your destination is a small town. If you haven’t already, you will definitely need to put in some work to locate accommodations if you need them. Many travel sites like Expedia and others have made it easier by listing hotels that are in the path of totality once it sees you have entered the date of the eclipse.

If you can find accommodations, be prepared to pay more than you normally would, as prices are definitely inflated for the event. I don’t really care for that idea, but it is what it is.

You will also want to make sure you have food, water, and a full tank of gas, as services may be limited in some locations. You want to make sure you are self-sufficient.

You also need to make sure you have the proper eyewear for viewing the eclipse. That means either eclipse-viewing glasses

or eclipse binoculars.

Of course, the binoculars are much more expensive than the glasses, but whatever you choose, be sure to choose quality products that are approved to protect your eyes from the sun. This is not the time to skimp. :)

You also need merch to commemorate the eclipse. Like this shirt.

Or this one. Nice Simon and Garfunkel reference. Do they get royalties from this eclipse? :)

There are lots of t-shirts available in many colors so you’re sure to find something you like.

If you live in or near the path of totality for this 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, I hope you will make the effort to experience this event. We have to wait another 20 years for the next one, so try to see this one if you can!

I’d love to know if you plan to experience this eclipse. Let me know in the comment section!

And I’d love for you to follow me on Pinterest!
