Summer Accessory: Wicker Handbags

Summer is still in full swing and that means lighter and more airy accessories than we carry in the cooler months. Wicker handbags are really having a lasting moment. They are great for late summer because they transition perfectly into fall.

 

I bought this one last summer and it is still being offered this summer, so wicker seems to have some staying power recently.

 

It’s always amusing to me how things come back around. My mother carried small wicker bags back in the day. It just shows you that classic things never go out of style.

Wicker baskets and bags have been documented all the way back to the Egyptians, so this is hardly a “trend.” Stylish women have been carrying them throughout the decades.

Grace Kelly in the 50s and Jane Birkin (yes, THAT Birkin) 🙂 in the 70s. So I don’t mind being in the company of those ladies.

And Nantucket Lightship Baskets have been around for over 150 years. While originally created for utilitarian purposes, many women carry them as handbags now.

These baskets are popular on Etsy. The craftsmanship is beautiful on these vintage baskets.

My daughter was traveling over Memorial Day weekend and was out shopping. She texted me, “This bag looks like you!” I said yes, please. 🙂 She bought it for me and the store was kind enough to ship it to me.

So as we keep trying to stay fresh looking during this nearly unbearable heat, pick up a little wicker handbag to complete your outfit.

Jane Austen wrote about a heatwave she was experiencing, “What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance.” 🙂 Oh, Jane, we’re right there with you.

But just because it’s hot is not a reason to be inelegant, right? 🙂
