The new year is here and that always feels like a fresh start and a chance to do some things differently. How do you approach a new year? Do you hit the ground running or are you a bit more reflective? If you are the reflective type, mindfulness might be your thing.

I think we can all benefit from taking a moment and assessing the last year–what went wrong, what went right, and what we would have done differently, and then approach the new year with that knowledge.

Mindfulness is described as the ability to be fully present and aware of what is going on around us and what we’re doing, without being overly reactive or overwhelmed by our surroundings.

It makes sense to strive for this because it really is the only thing we slightly have an effect on. 🙂 We can’t do anything about stuff that happened yesterday, and we don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow, so today is the day.

Some people are better at living in the moment than others. My husband is stunningly good at it. Some of us are worriers or we dwell on things that have already happened, trying to analyze them. This would describe me. 🙂 But mindfulness is a skill that can be honed.

Mindfulness doesn’t mean we should just never ponder things that have happened. Sometimes that is necessary to make decisions or to take action. It just means we shouldn’t “live” in the past or future. We need to focus our energies on the now.

Could you use some help with developing a spirit of mindfulness? I know I could. 🙂

I have a new Mindfulness Journal that may be helpful to you.

Mindfulness

It has 31 pages, one for each day of the month. It is a digital download, so you get access to it immediately.

Each day asks a different question or provides a prompt:

These are just a few sample pages from the journal. You can take a look at more here.

If you’d like to get started working on mindfulness, I have a free gift for you. It is an instant download of 50 journal prompts for living in the moment. You can have it delivered straight to your inbox and get started.

If you’d like to read more about mindfulness, there are many excellent books on the subject. Two I can recommend are both called Mindfulness. 🙂 One is by Mark Williams and Danny Penman.

The other is by Ellen J. Langer.

As you start the new year, I hope you will take a moment to sit with it and think about how you want it to look and how you can live more in the present. I hope these tools can help. If you have things that have helped you with mindfulness, please share in the comment section!

And I’d love for you to follow me on Pinterest!
